Littmann Stethoscope ID Tag

3M Littmann ID Tag offers a durable, attractive identification for your stethoscope. It has the Littmann logo on one side and a space for the nameplate on the other. The Littmann ID tag offers two nameplates. One for a handwritten name and the other may be engraved for a more professional appearance. The engraving is done by Redding Medical. The Littmann ID comes in black or gray and should match the trim on your stethoscope.

Stethoscope Cleaning 101

littmann

“How do I clean my stethoscope?” It’s a question we are asked frequently, and for good reason. Clinicians who care for patients want to help prevent the spread of germs.

To clean your 3M™ Littmann® stethoscope, use 70% isopropyl alcohol solution on a cloth or pre-packaged wipe, and wipe all patient contacting surfaces of your stethoscope between each assessment. Do not use hand sanitizer or wipes with multiple ingredients, as they may include other agents that could damage parts of the stethoscope.

Littmann 3000 Electronic Stethoscope

3M Introduces Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3000 with Breakthrough Ambient Noise Reduction (ANR) Technology; Designed to Pick Up Difficult-To-Hear Heart and Lung Sounds While Offering Superior Acoustic Sensitivity

3M created the Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3000 featuring amplification and proprietary ambient noise reduction (ANR) technology. The new Littmann Model 3000 has been proven to reduce ambient noise by an average of 75 percent without filtering out critical body sounds and offers amplification up to 18 times greater than the best acoustic stethoscope. This breakthrough technology represents a key milestone in the area of acoustic sensitivity that can be critical to proper clinical diagnosis and quality auscultation.

In recent controlled experiments, clinicians using the Littmann Model 3000 have picked up difficult-to-hear heart and lung sounds, while missing or misidentifying those same sounds with an acoustic (non-electronic) cardiology-grade stethoscope. In a multi-center clinical study, doctors rated the Littmann Model 3000 significantly better than traditional, nonelectronic stethoscopes when comparing the tone and clarity of heart, lung, blood vessel and bowels sounds.

Eighty-two percent of cardiologists in a controlled experiment indicated it was easier to detect an aortic regurgitation (Grade 1 or 2) with the Littmann Model 3000 than with an acoustic cardiology-type stethoscope of traditional design(1). In that same experiment, cardiologists missed a Grade 2 aortic regurgitation murmur five times more often with the acoustic stethoscope than they did with the Model 3000.

In another experiment, 90 percent of critical care nurses, who were asked to identify prerecorded normal and abnormal lung sounds, indicated that it was easier to detect abnormal sounds with the Littmann Model 3000 than with an acoustic cardiology-type stethoscope of traditional design(2). In that same experiment, critical care nurses misidentified whether a lung sound was normal or abnormal two times more often with the acoustic stethoscope than they did with the Model 3000.

"For more than 40 years, Littmann has been the stethoscope doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals have used to learn auscultation skills," said Ned Hancock, product manager. "3M is proud to take this trusted diagnostic tool to the next level with the Littmann Model 3000, which we believe will increase clinicians' ability to pick up sounds that are difficult to hear, even in a noisy environment."

Ambient Noise: a Hindrance to Diagnosis

Health care professionals have long been in need of a solution to the problem of ambient noise, as it can mask some body sounds making diagnosis more difficult. Ambient noise includes human voices, medical equipment and other environmental sounds. Importantly, ambient noise is not limited to the air; it can travel through the patient's body as well. This noise makes it more difficult to hear the body sounds of interest.

Previous attempts to reduce ambient noise have involved amplification or filtering. Unfortunately, when important body sounds were amplified, so was ambient noise. And, efforts to filter ambient noise may result in the filtering out of important body sounds.

Today's Technology Results in a Better Diagnostic Tool

Reducing ambient room noise requires eliminating the noise when it is in the air and when it travels through the patient's body. ANR technology successfully addresses this issue without filtering out important sounds. Noise from the room enters the stethoscope through a thin gap in the chestpiece. Once inside, this noise meets the ambient noise that has traveled through the patient's body and entered the chestpiece through the diaphragm. The ambient noise, traveling the two pathways, cancels itself out, leaving only the heart and lung sounds clinicians need to hear.

Significantly, ANR technology does not filter out important body sounds, allowing clinicians to gather the information they need to make the diagnosis. Presenting clinicians with a new standard in auscultation equipped with ANR technology, the Model 3000 builds upon the trusted, dependable Littmann brand name. 3M™ Innovation Littmann® Model 3200 Stethoscope Award

AS GOOD AS GOLD: 3M Mobile Projection Technology and Littmann® Model 3200 Stethoscope/Zargis Cardioscan™ Win Edison Awards

ST. PAUL, Minn. – 3M today announced it is the recipient of two Gold Awards at The Edison Best New Products Award gala, presented by Discovery Channel in New York City. The prestigious Gold Award is the top honor given by the Edison Award Steering Committee for product excellence in innovation, creativity and ingenuity, as demonstrated by inventor Thomas Alva Edison. As a leader in both the mobile interactive electronics and healthcare industries, 3M was recognized for its Mobile Projection Technology in the Technology category and Littmann Model 3200 stethoscope with Zargis Cardioscan software in the Electronics and Computers category, respectively.

The Power of Projection

As 3M’s most recent product to incorporate the diversified technology company’s Mobile Projection Technology, the 3M MPro150 was released to consumers in March 2010. Designed with professionals in mind, the MPro150 projects up to a 50-inch VGA image and offers a two hour battery life, despite being just over 5 inches long and weighing a mere 5.6 ounces. It includes 1 GB internal memory, a micro SD card slot and a USB input for transferring files from a laptop or netbook, so there is no need to carry the content device since entire presentations can be pre-loaded onto the mobile projector itself.

“We’ve long said 3M mobile projection and its products represent the gold standard in this category,” said Mark Colin, vice president & general manager, Mobile Interactive Solutions Division at 3M. “Receiving a Gold Award from the Edison Awards leaves no doubt.”

The recognition was just the latest in a string of industry accolades bestowed on the company’s innovative projection technology. 3M’s MPro110 pocket projector was recognized as the Grand Award winner in Popular Science’s “2008 Best of What’s New” awards while the 3M MPro120 was named one of PC World’s “100 Best Products of 2009.” The recently launched 3M MPro150 received a coveted “Highly Rated” seal from projectorcentral.com.

The MPro150 supports Microsoft® Office applications (Word, Power Point® and Excel®), as well as Adobe® PDF, photos and video, allowing the user to project images up to 50-inches at 15 lumens brightness in either the boardroom or break room. Additional features include an integrated MP3 player, flip stand and tripod.

The Heart of Stethoscope Innovation

The Bluetooth®-enabled, wireless 3M™ Littmann® Electronic Stethoscope Model 3200 with Zargis Cardioscan™ software, claims its third award in 2010, following significant recognition in late 2009. The novel stethoscope/software system, which was named 2009 Popular Science “Innovation of the Year” and winner in the “Health” category, is also the 2010 recipient of two industry awards for design and innovation - “red dot: best of the best” award for product design, and the Medical Design Excellence Award.

“Pairing the Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3200 with Zargis Cardioscan software is a huge advancement in changing the way clinicians listen to and interpret heart sounds,” said Debra Rectenwald, president and general manager, 3M Infection Prevention Division. “This major award win is a testament to the spirit that drives 3M’s innovation to develop and create new ways to improve the delivery of healthcare. We are honored that 3M’s innovation in healthcare has been recognized by the Edison Awards.”

The Stethoscope Model 3200 is a next-generation auscultation device featuring Bluetooth technology that wirelessly transfers heart, lung and other body sounds to software for further analysis. The scope pairs wirelessly with both of Zargis Medical’s companion software packages: Zargis Cardioscan software supports physicians in analyzing cardiac sounds for the identification and classification of suspected murmurs, which can be signs of heart disease, while Zargis StethAssist™ software allows clinicians to visualize heart, lung and other body sounds, play recordings at slow speeds to hear more clearly, and save recordings for comparison to future auscultations. The scope and software together mark a breakthrough in computer-aided auscultation that has the potential to reduce unnecessary referrals.

Recognition for ingenuity in two such distinct categories continues to underline 3M’s proud reputation as a leader in innovation. Sarah Miller Caldicott, great grandniece of Thomas Edison, and Chairperson of the Edison Awards Steering Committee, commented, “Innovation is more important now than ever. The Edison Award winners are the moving parts in the engine of economic growth. They inspire people to think outside the box and their results improve the lives of people around the world.” The Edison Awards honor a wide variety of innovative products with Gold, Silver, and Bronze prizes representing first place, second, and third in each of its 11 categories.

3M Littmann Confirm Label for Counterfeit Protection

3M™ Littmann® Counterfit Watch

It has come to our attention that counterfeit stethoscopes bearing the Littmann brand are being sold in the USA. While available at a lower cost than the genuine products, these stethoscopes deliver correspondingly poor performance.

To help clinicians be sure they are obtaining a genuine Littmann Stethoscope, all acoustic (non-electronic) stethoscopes with a 2007 lot code (or later) will carry a 3M Confirm™ Authentication Label with Floating Image Technology. This security label will be placed on the underside of every
primary box. (Also on the underside can be found the lot code sticker.)

The 3M Confirm label can be viewed best with a viewing tool, such as a doctor's ophthalmoscope or a light source held against the temple of the viewer. Such a tool is, however, not necessary. Either way, the viewer will see an image that appears to "float" above or "sink" below the surface of the label and then disappear as the viewing angle changes. Dramatic movement of the image is easy to detect and recognize using only the human eye, enabling quick and easy authentication that proves the label and product are genuine.

3M stresses the importance of only purchasing Littmann brand stethoscopes from 3M authorized distributors. Should you have any questions about the authenticity of any Littmann Stethoscope, please contact 3M immediately.
